What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (also known as PAT Testing) is an important part of a company's or individual's health and safety procedure. This is done using special testers using a series of tests on your electrical items making sure they are safe to use.
What sort of tests will be undertaken?
The first test we start with is a visual inspection checking for damaged equipment, flexes, plugs.
· Correctly wired plugs, signs of overheating and discolouration.
· Correct rated fuses
Then a number of tests using a PAT tester which may consist of.
· Insulation resistance
· Earth continuity
· Polarity
· Earth leakage
Can IT equipment be damaged by the tests?
We use special testers for sensitive electrical equipment which only allow the item to go through a soft test making it ideal for IT equipment.
Our employees bring some of their own electrical items to work, do they need testing?
Yes. Private equipment at work has just the same potential to be dangerous. By allowing electrical equipment on site, the employer becomes responsible for the safety of it.
